THE TITHE ORCHARD

Marit Ferrow has been the valley’s record-keeper for five years, and for three of them she has known that the tithe ledger doesn’t add up. Sorrel Vale sends one daughter up the ridge every Hallowmas, the orchard takes her, and the harvest never fails — this is the arrangement the valley has made for two hundred years and does not discuss. The ledger records every drawing and every departure. Marit has checked the arithmetic. More names have gone up the ridge than the rite requires, and some of them were never drawn at all.

When the lot falls to her sister — her sister who is betrothed, whose wedding is in the spring, who is going to be fine if Marit can get access to the inside — Marit takes her place. Not to be heroic. Because she cannot finish the count from outside the orchard, and the count needs to be finished.

What she finds inside is Ivo Sark, the Warden of Rows: old, courteous, precise in the way of something that has been keeping exact records for two centuries, and so deeply starved for a person who will argue with him instead of weep that he requires three days to process Marit’s arrival as real. He is not the monster the valley has built its grief around. He is also not able to break the bargain alone, which he has known for forty years — the same forty years during which he has watched the valley quietly adding names of its own to the rite to settle private debts, and said nothing, because telling required explaining, and explaining required finding a listener he did not believe would come.

Then she corrects a notation error in his 1889 soil composition records, and he realizes what has arrived.

Two people auditing the same fraud from opposite sides of it, falling for each other’s competence while every answer makes leaving harder — and a termination clause buried in a 200-year-old contract that only a record-keeper’s descendant can invoke.

Dark gothic romantasy for the reader who wants the slow burn earned one ledger correction at a time.

WHY THIS WILL SELL

→ SF&F > Fantasy > Romantic is the highest-efficiency category in the romantasy dataset — 18.2 sales-to-comp ratio (Hot Mainstream), ~732 estimated daily sales per top 20 title, with 40,200 competing titles versus 126,372 in the main Romantasy list

→ Romance > Gothic adds a lower-competition ranking lane — 8.1 sales-to-comp (Hot Mainstream), under 12,300 competing titles, avg top-20 rank under 1,000; this is where a dark atmospheric standalone can reach the top 20 and stay there

→ Forced proximity stacks with slow burn at a high-index intersection — forced proximity at index 58 ($2.5M monthly royalties), slow burn at index 30 ($2.9M); the seasonal-clock structure locks both in for the full novel with no escape hatch

→ Competence-as-seduction is underserved at exactly the premium end — banter (index 45, $1.6M), “he falls first” (index 50, $615K), and enemy/allies ($3.9M) all converge here; the reader who wants to watch a precise man fall for a precise woman’s brain is actively looking for this book

→ The sacrificial bride subversion is a search-intent capture and a retention mechanism — readers searching the trope find it; readers tired of the trope stay because it does something different; both outcomes serve the listing
