THE INVENTORY
Pru Adeyemi is thirty-one years old and very good at her job — which is, specifically, understanding what other people need to hear. She spent eight years in marketing finding the angle that lands, the message that sticks, the version of someone else's truth that moves. What she has never managed is a message of her own. When her great-aunt Beatrice dies and leaves her the keys to an antique and curiosity shop in a small Virginia river town, Pru quits her Richmond job, packs her car, and drives toward the only test that has ever felt high enough stakes to be real.
Then she unlocks the door and finds the ledger open to a page dated last Thursday.
The shop has been unoccupied for two years. The window display was changed within the last month. There is a cold cup of tea on the front counter and a price tag on the lamp in different handwriting — corrected, she notes, by forty percent. By the end of her second day, she has accepted the following: someone is in the shop, someone who knows the inventory better than she does, and the most practical response is to keep working.
Callum Webb has been minding The Inventory for two years since his death because someone has to, and because leaving felt like abandoning a woman he'd already failed to outlive. He is dry, object-obsessed, and considerably more socially functional than most ghosts — he has been interacting with the town's regulars, obliquely, for two years, and is practiced at being present without being acknowledged. The town of Dellmore, Virginia, has collectively decided not to make this a problem. There is a café owner who leaves a cup of tea on the front counter every Tuesday. There is a retired teacher who communicates with him through the arrangement of the china shelf. He has been waiting, in his particular and precise way, for someone worth teaching.
Before Pru can make the shop solvent, there is: the lamp repriced while her back was turned, the index card system she learns to read like a second language, the Georgian tea caddy she identifies correctly on her first solo buying trip and the single-word card that follows (Correct.), the Edwardian writing desk she sells to a writer from Charlottesville who cries a little when she hears where it came from and Pru realizing mid-sentence she has started telling him where the pieces went the same way he tells her where they came from, the china shelf configured as a message she reads correctly after twenty minutes and cannot stop laughing about, and the morning she comes back from a buying trip with a small carved box she cannot identify, puts it on the counter between them, and says tell me about this one — and he looks at it for a long time and says I don't know — and she says good, then we figure it out together.
She has spent her career making other people's stories land. He has organized his entire existence around knowing the name and history of every beautiful thing he has ever touched. Neither of them has a word for what this is. Neither of them is going to force one.
Contemporary ghost romance with wood oil and cold morning light and a whole town keeping a very good secret. The kind of book where the love story is built out of every object in the shop, and the shop turns out to be everything.
WHY THIS WILL SELL
→ Fantasy, Paranormal & Beyond > Ghosts sits at 6.8 sales-to-comp (Hot Niche) with 45–65 daily sales per top 20 title — and the shop-setting ghost romance is nearly absent from the category's top 20, which skews toward house and hotel hauntings; this package targets a genuine gap in a proven market
→ Dual-category positioning with Romance > Paranormal (4.9 sales-to-comp, Hot Mainstream) gives legitimate placement in both a Hot Niche and a Hot Mainstream category simultaneously, maximizing KU discovery and buy-through at $4.99
→ The warm-comedy tone maps directly to cozy fantasy crossover readers — the fastest-growing adjacent segment in paranormal romance; this is the single most cross-shelf accessible ghost romance on the market
→ The object-as-love-language mechanic and shop setting are social-share optimized — specific, visual, quotable; the carved wooden box exchange and china shelf communication system are made for BookTok
→ Small Town & Rural crossover positioning (3.2 sales-to-comp) is built into the premise — Dellmore, Virginia is a working setting with a full ensemble cast, not just a backdrop; the third category is natural and requires no copy adjustment
