THE THIRD WOMAN

Gail Pemberton has spent thirty years being the person Lorraine Farwell calls first. Not because she had to. Because she was Lorraine's person — the one who got the Tuesday call, the Thursday debrief, the unguarded version of every story. She built her emotional life around this and she knew she did and she considered that a form of grace.

Then Lorraine dies, and at the memorial Gail meets Simone Achterberg.

Within the hour, both women understand the same thing: Lorraine had told each of them the other didn't exist. For thirty years, each was Lorraine's closest friend. Neither knew about the other. Lorraine left no letter, no journal, no explanation — only the silence she apparently had no trouble keeping.

Before either woman can grieve the version of Lorraine she thought she knew, there are: a phone call where Gail discovers she and Simone were told completely different stories about why Lorraine stopped speaking to her mother, a visit to Portland where Gail sees the garden Simone keeps and understands for the first time that Lorraine wasn't choosing between two versions of the same thing, a photograph that turns up in the archive proving Lorraine was somewhere she specifically said she had never been, two women who keep finding each other's evidence first and holding it a moment before sharing, and one phone call — late, in December — where one of them finally says the thing neither of them has been able to say: I don't think she knew, either.

Gail has spent thirty years being the capable one, the person other people call when things need managing, so completely that she forgot to ask what she was getting in return. Simone has spent her adult life believing her self-sufficiency was a philosophical choice and is now starting to wonder whether it was something someone else made very easy for her to maintain.

Book club fiction for the reader who has ever organized her emotional life around one friendship — and wondered, sometimes, if the other person understood exactly what she was doing.

The kind of novel that makes you call someone you love and ask, without quite knowing what you're really asking, whether they actually know who you are.

WHY THIS WILL SELL

→ Fiction > Women's Fiction > Friendship sits at 5.8–6.4 sales-to-comp (Hot Mainstream) with 55–80 estimated daily sales per top 20 title — female friendship as primary subject is one of the most reliable book-club acquisition signals in the lane

→ Dual-category play with Fiction > Literary > Family Life (6.1–6.8 sales-to-comp, Hot Mainstream) positions this book alongside perennial book-club bestsellers in two high-volume categories simultaneously

→ The structural conceit is the hook — alternating first-person narrators who are both right and both incomplete, with the reader always holding more than either of them; this is the architecture that drove Malibu Rising and Hello Beautiful to sustained bestseller placement

→ The central question doesn't resolve cleanly by design — "was she protecting them or using them?" is engineered for book-club argument, which is the primary word-of-mouth driver in this lane

→ The protagonist archetype is underserved in current bestsellers — a high-functioning woman in her late fifties discovering she has been wrong about the central relationship of her adult life is exactly what the 40–65 reader who made Lessons in Chemistry a phenomenon is looking for next

→ Standalone format is a purchasing incentive in this lane — upmarket WF readers actively filter for complete emotional closure; "no series commitment" removes the single most common friction point in this reader's acquisition decision
